Alcohol Awareness Month: How Servers and Sellers Can Lead the Way in April

April 02, 2025

Each April, Alcohol Awareness Month serves as a nationwide reminder of the importance of promoting responsible alcohol use—and the unique role that the hospitality industry plays in that mission.

At LIQUORexam.com, we train thousands of servers, bartenders, managers, and business owners across the country. We know firsthand that those on the front lines of alcohol service are critical to protecting public safety, supporting healthy communities, and ensuring compliance with the law.

Why It Matters

Alcohol misuse impacts families, communities, and workplaces. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), over 140,000 deaths each year in the U.S. are attributed to excessive alcohol use. The consequences range from drunk driving and health issues to violence and workplace incidents.

As a server or seller, you’re in a position to recognize risky behavior, prevent overservice, and contribute to a safer environment for everyone.

What Servers and Sellers Can Do:

Follow the law—and know the “why” behind it
Understanding state and local alcohol laws isn’t just about avoiding fines—it's about protecting lives. Take your role seriously and complete proper alcohol server training, even if it’s not required in your area.

Be aware of signs of intoxication
Look for slurred speech, glassy eyes, unsteady movement, or aggressive behavior. If you suspect a guest has had too much, speak to your manager or follow your establishment’s intervention policy.

Check IDs carefully—every time
Fake IDs and underage drinking are still major issues. Take the time to verify IDs and use tools like ID scanners when available.

Communicate with your team
Let your coworkers and supervisors know if you have concerns about a guest. Staying on the same page is essential for safe service.

What Owners and Managers Can Do:

Create a culture of responsibility
Model responsible behavior for your staff and emphasize safety and compliance in your team meetings and training.

Provide and enforce training
Require alcohol server training for all staff, and offer refreshers as part of ongoing development. (Hint: We can help with that at LIQUORexam.com!)

Update your policies and procedures
Make sure your house policies support responsible service—like setting a cut-off policy, offering non-alcoholic options, and providing free water.

Support community awareness
Use your business’s social media or in-store signage to promote Alcohol Awareness Month. Consider collaborating with local organizations or hosting a mocktail event to promote safe choices.

Let’s Lead by Example

As hospitality professionals, we are ambassadors for safety and responsibility. Alcohol Awareness Month is the perfect time to reflect on how we can do better—individually and as an industry.
